"Looking for Precision and Quality in Your Designs? I'll Tell You Why Screen Printing Is Your Best Option.

Screen printing is a technique that is often underestimated (perhaps due to its popularity) but is fundamental in the design world because it has managed to endure over time as a durable artistic technique. This form of printing, due to its versatility, is highly valued by users of personalized items for its precision and quality in the design reproduction process.

In this article, we’ll explore together this conventional technique and its relevance in today’s world, its advantages, how the process works, what materials and tools are used, as well as its application in various sectors and more.

The Screen Printing Process

The correct process in screen printing ensures that you achieve the quality results you expect. It’s important to ensure you follow all the steps or consult with knowledgeable individuals familiar with the process.

1.  Design and Preparation:

A correct design effectively conveys your spirit, personality, and message, yet is also carefully crafted. For instance, proper selection of visual elements like appropriate font, color, aesthetic arrangement, and a balanced use of graphic elements, such as form and composition to avoid visual clutter.

Once your design incorporates all these elements, it’s time to transfer it onto a silk or polyester mesh screen, essentially the stencil. Each design you work with requires a separate stencil, allowing multi-color printing.

The design is printed on a clear transparent paper called film. Then, the film will be placed on the top of the screen and be exposed to the led lightning so it can be burned into the screen.

2.  Screen Preparation

First, cover the screen with a light-sensitive material called emolotion. This layer is then exposed to light through a film with the design. When the light reaches the layer, it hardens and eventually forms the ink stencil, while the parts protected by the design remain soft.

3. Exposure Process

In this stage, the film is exposed to the led light using a light box that has the power to project a strong led light that burns the design on the screen. Then the  screen is rinsed, revealing the printed design on the mesh. This step ensures that the ink only passes through the design areas, resulting in clear and precise printing.

4. Ink and Surface Preparation

Inks are mixed to achieve the desired colors, so it’s crucial to use high-quality inks that adhere well to the surface, maintaining their intensity and durability. There are many types of inks that will provide different finishes on the fabric. The most common inks are: plastisol, water base, and discharge.  Additionally, the surface of the fabrick requires its own preparation to ensure it’s clean, level, and suitable for ink application. For instance, there are some fabric materials that need to be preheated, or pre warmed before printing on them. Other fabrics need more than 3 swipes of inks to get a smooth finish. This step guarantees that the ink adheres and the design is reproduced with precision and clarity.

5. Printing

The screen is mounted on the screen printing machine and aligned to the right measurement of the space where the design is going to be printed, which can be fabric, paper, or other materials, then push the ink through the mesh using a squeegee made of rubber material. Precision is crucial at this stage for accurate printing.

6. Curing and Finishing

Once the ink is dry, it needs to be cured. This can be done by inserting the printed piece into a dryer machine which can cure the ink at 750 F. This ensures the printing is durable and washing-resistant.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Materials and Tools

The materials and tools used in screen printing are highly specific to ensure high-quality results. Here’s everything you need to know about each:

A. Meshes and Frames: typically made of silk or polyester, this fabric is attached to rigid frames. The tension and mesh quality directly influence the precision of the printed design.

B. Specific Inks: chosen based on the type of fabric and the design to be printed. They must be formulated to optimally adhere to the material.

C. Chemicals for Screen Preparation: used to create permeable and impermeable areas on the screen, facilitating or preventing ink transfer for precise printing.

D. Squeegees: rubber spatulas used to apply ink through the screen, ensuring even distribution on fabrics.

E. Dryers and Curers: to treat the fabric at a controlled temperature that provides durability for the print.

Use in the Textile Industry

In this industry, screen printing has a variety of uses. The most prominent ones are:

A. Fashion and Apparel: this technique is commonly used to print patterns and designs on T-shirts, sweatshirts, pants, and a wide range of garments. It’s useful because it allows mass reproduction without compromising quality on different fabric types.

B. Home Textiles: screen printing is employed for printing on fabrics for sheets, curtains, towels, and covers. This is used to personalize them with designs that complement the décor and personal style.

C. Advertising Materials: logos, messages, and designs are printed on fabric bags, banners, etc.

D. School and Work Uniforms: Used for identifying individuals belonging to an institution, reinforcing the identity and promoting the establishment’s image.

Advantages and Challenges of Textile Screen Printing

Among the main advantages of textile screen printing, durability in the print takes the lead. This technique offers durability and washing resistance, ideal for clothing or items that need frequent laundering. Secondly, its versatility in use across a wide range of fabrics. Other advantages include precise reproduction with a higher level of detail, ideal for complex designs with fine details and vibrant colors, and mass production without compromising quality and printing precision.

On the other hand, consider the challenges that exist, such as limitations in reproducing very small details or subtle gradients. The screen printing process time is longer compared to other digital printing techniques because it involves manual processes.
